OzBid Auctions offers both live auction events nationally and online (Timed) only auctions. Below you will find handy information and FAQ’s. Simply click on the question to see the answer.

OzBid Auctions gives you the chance to attend auctions no matter where you are in the world. Leave an absentee bid or compete in real-time with floor bidders for auction lots. You can also choose to watch our live broadcast of the auction without participating to gain a better understanding of how it works. To watch or actively bid online with us we recommend you follow the minimum system requirements below.
Minimum system requirements for Live Video Broadcast
• Download the most recent version of your internet browser. We recommend using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari.
• Update your operating system (Windows or Mac) with the latest version.
• Download the latest version of Adobe Flash on your computer http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
• Ensure your Internet connection is stable.
• If you experience technical issues during the auction, try “refreshing” your browser to re-sync connection. Please be aware, there is (approximately) a 3 second lag with the video stream. However, the auction interface is updated instantly, so keep an eye on the “Bid Amount”.
• OzBid Auctions can also be accessed on all Internet connected computers, iOS and Android devices (phones and tablets).
A Live Auction is a one-day only event. OzBid Auctions runs Live Auctions all over Australia, hosted in easy to access public venues, such as a town hall or function center. Leading up to the auction, we publish a catalogue on our website, so you can see exactly what will be available on the day.
There is also a viewing on the day of the auction at the venue, prior to the start of the auction. During the viewing, you can take the opportunity to talk with our Art Specialist and Auctioneer about any of the Lots on offer or any general questions about the auction.
The Live Auction usually takes approximately 3 hours. At the end of the auction, bidders can pay for and take home their items or arrange delivery.
If you cannot attend the Live Auction, you can bid online (in real time) from your computer or Internet connected devices (phones and tablets). Or you can leave an absentee bid. We can then arrange fast door-to-door delivery to you, anywhere in the world!
A Timed Auction is an online-only auction. This means all of the action takes place online and there is no actual Live Auction venue. The catalogue items are only available to view online.
The duration of a Timed Auction is usually 5 days. For example it will start at 7pm on a Monday and finish at 7pm on a Friday (days and times will vary).
The benefit of a Timed Auction is that active bidding is available 24/7 from anywhere in the world. You can see the bidding history on every Lot, so you know exactly what you need to bid to win. You will receive instant email updates on any Lots you bid on.
At the conclusion of a Timed Auction, all winning bidders will be notified via email. We can then arrange fast door-to-door delivery to you, anywhere in the world!
If you’re unable to attend the Live Auction or participate in real time from your computer or Internet connected device (phone or tablet), you can leave a absentee bid prior to the live event, so you will still be in on the action.
Your absentee bid remains anonymous, displaying only your bidder number and the amount. All registered bidders can see the bidding history on a Lot. This means you can ensure you leave the highest bid to win! If anyone leaves a higher absentee bid than your current amount, you will be notified by email instantly, giving you the opportunity to increase your maximum bid.
Our online bidder system will execute your bid once the auction goes live, attempting to execute the transaction at the lowest price possible, based on any other absentee bids and live floor bids.
Scenario 1) Lot 55 has 0 absentee bids with a starting bid of $550. You leave a maximum absentee bid of $800. At the auction, your absentee bid outbids all other bids in the room. You win the lot for $650.
Scenario 2) Lot 55 has 1 absentee bid of $700 with a starting bid of $550. You leave a maximum bid of $800. At the auction, your absentee bid outbids all other bids in the room and the other absentee bid. You win the lot for $800.
If you are not yet ready to bid, but would like to watch any of the auction competition live, you are welcome to attend a Live Auction or watch in real time online.
We always offer a 1.5 hour viewing time before a Live Auction begins. This way you can have any questions that you may have answered by our Art Specialist and Auctioneer to ensure you can bid confidently and securely. Catalogues with full descriptions and images are also published online and a printed copy is available on the day, to help whilst perusing the many artworks on display.
We do not offer a formal viewing for Timed Auctions, these auctions are online-only. If you would like to schedule a private viewing of an item in a Timed Auction please contact us.
All items are consigned from galleries, dealers, artists or private vendors. All artworks and items consigned are personally checked by our specialst staff for quality and authenticity.
Before the Live Auction commences, it is a requirement to register at our registration desk and obtain a bidding card. As a condition of registration, you will need to provide a current driver’s license or another form of photo identification, which is deemed acceptable.
You will then be given a bidder number that will be unique to you for that day. When you would like to place a bid on an item, you simply raise your bidders card (or hand) so that the auctioneer can acknowledge and record your interest.
If you can’t stay for the auction but would like to bid on items, you may also leave an absentee bid or register for a telephone phone. This is only available if you have registered on the day in person or through our website. Our auction staff are more than happy to assist. You can also bid live online from your computer or device (phone or tablet) during a Live Auction.
So if you cannot stay for the duration of the Live Auction you can still take part from where ever you are in the world! It’s fun and easy! Just make sure to check the minimum system requirements of your computer (listed above).
Bidding in a Timed Auction is easy. After registering your details on our website, you will have access to leave bids on Lots. You will be able to see the bidding history (amounts and bidder numbers) on all lots, so you can leave the maximum bid.
If you are ‘outbid’ you will immediately be notified via email. This will give you the best opportunity to increase your maximum bid to win the lot!
At the conclusion of a Timed Auction, all winning bidders will be notified via email. We can then arrange fast door-to-door delivery to you, anywhere in the world!
In a Live Auction event we generally only place reserves on approximately 15% of items and these are generally the most expensive items in the auction. All other lots will be unreserved and sold to the highest bidder on the day. If an item is passed in (not sold during the auction) it is then open for negotiation and the reserve will be disclosed upon request.
Buying at auction is like buying wholesale. Most items can be purchased for up to 80% off retail prices. Our trade vendors consign with us as an avenue to liquidate stock quickly.
We also work closely with working artist studios, so effectively the artwork goes direct from the studio to the auction, cutting out the ‘middle man’ or gallery. We even have galleries both nationally and internationally buying from us to then on-sell. So when buying from us at auction, you can be certain that you are getting great value for money!
Our aim is, and has always been, to protect both the artists, to ensure they are correctly remunerated for their work; and our customers, to ensure they are being sold a genuine artwork at a reasonable price.
The artists’ resale royalty scheme is Government Legislation and started on 9 June 2010. Under the scheme: commercial resales of artworks for $1,000 or more must be reported; and a 5% royalty is payable on some resales.
The Australian government appointed Copyright Agency to manage the scheme. Key features of the scheme: it applies to resales of existing as well as new works; it applies to a range of original artworks, included limited edition prints authorised by the artist; a royalty is not payable on resales for under $1,000. If an artwork is liable for Resale Royalty this will be marked in the lot description.
Payment for purchases must be made in full on the day of the Live Auction at the venue. If you need to discuss a payment extension, please feel free to approach the admin staff on the day before bidding.
Forms of payment include: Cash, bank transfer, Visa, MasterCard, AMEX and personal cheque. If paying by cheque please be prepared to show 3 forms of identification.
If you are an online bidder (absentee of live bidding), an invoice will be emailed to you at the completion of the auction, you then have 2 days to finalise payment.
At the conclusion of a Timed Auction, all winning bidders will be notified via email. Invoices will be charged to the credit card left on file, and items will be shipped to the address provided. For more info on deliveries, check Do you Deliver?
No, there are no credit card surcharges at all.
It is standard practice across all auction houses to add a commission fee to the sales price of every item known as a Buyer’s Premium (BP).
The Buyer’s Premium is 24% including GST on the hammer price. For example, if an item is sold for (hammers at) $100.00 with a 24% BP, the final cost to the purchaser will be 100 x 24% = $124.00 (Including GST).
Please note GST is considered inclusive in the hammer price.
Most artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity. If this is the case, it will be clearly noted in the lot description in the catalogue. All certificates/photos/documentation supplied to us by the vendor are passed on to the purchaser.
Throughout the process of acquiring and consigning art – from reputable galleries, artists directly or private owners – we are committed to ensuring all of the work we sell is authentic.
All artworks sold at our auctions are backed by a guarantee of authenticity, and it is our firm understanding at the time of sale that what we are selling is true to the value of the work. With that being said, from time to time, issues of artist authenticity do arise, and they are queries we take seriously and act on immediately.
Absolutely. In fact this is one of our strengths. Our auction staff are available to help organise delivery of artworks, at affordable pricing So there is no need to worry about getting a large artwork or multiple artworks delivered to your home or office. If you live locally to the Live Auction a flat fee of $50 is payable for a personal courier delivery, whether you purchase 1 or 20 items, it’s simply a one off flat fee. All local deliveries will occur after the auction between 6pm and 11pm and the next day between 9am – 6pm.

As with all auctions, the fall of the hammer is final and all lots are ‘sold as is’. We encourage you to ask as many questions as you need to before the auction, so as to satisfy yourself. Please refer to our Terms & Conditions for more detailed information. OzBid Auctions takes into consideration the Australian Consumer Law. If you feel you are entitled to a refund under this law please contact us.

Collection of your personal information
There are many aspects of the site which can be viewed without providing personal information, however, for access to future OzBid Auctions customer support features you are required to submit personally identifiable information. This may include but not limited to a unique username and password, or provide sensitive information in the recovery of your lost password.
Sharing of your personal information
We may occasionally hire other companies to provide services on our behalf, including but not limited to handling processing transactions or customer freight shipping. Those companies will be permitted to obtain only the personal information they need to deliver the service. OzBid Auctions takes reasonable steps to ensure that these organisations are bound by confidentiality and privacy obligations in relation to the protection of your personal information.
Use of your personal information
For each visitor to reach the site, we expressively collect the following non-personally identifiable information, including but not limited to browser type, version and language, operating system, pages viewed while browsing the Site, page access times and referring website address. This collected information is used solely internally for the purpose of gauging visitor traffic, trends and delivering personalised content to you while you are at this Site.
From time to time, we may use customer information for new, unanticipated uses not previously disclosed in our privacy notice. If our information practices change at some time in the future we will use for these new purposes only, data collected from the time of the policy change forward will adhere to our updated practices.
Accessing Your Personal Information
You have a right to access your personal information, subject to exceptions allowed by law. If you would like to do so, please let us know. You may be required to put your request in writing for security reasons.

Ozbid offers Free Shipping Australia Wide for items bought at auction or in the online gallery. Terms & Conditions apply below. Ozbid will package up and send with a sign on delivery courier. This service has no charge to the buyer unless you are not home to receive and sign for the goods. In the case of a ‘re-delivery’ of goods by the courier all charges will be the responsibility of the purchaser. This will range anywhere from $30 upwards depending on the size and weight of the package/packages. This re-delivery charge will need to be paid in full before this service is arranged. ** Please note: if you have purchased artworks over the value of $5000 per piece or if they are deemed to be rare pieces Ozbid will be in contact with you to discuss a specialised delivery option at cost to include insurance cover for loss or damage, in this case our free delivery will not be available. ** Please note: if you have purchased an extra large piece in excess of 2.3m x 1.4m Ozbid will need to discuss alternative delivery options. In this case Ozbid can only offer free shipping if we can deliver the item/s when Ozbid is in your specific area within the next few months. If the artwork is needed before such a time fees will apply.** Please note: if you live in a remote or rural area of Australia there may be an additional charge for shipping. Ozbid Auction Terms
1. Auctioneer is Agent for Vendor
OzBid Auctions is agent for the Vendor and is not responsible for any default by the Vendor or the Buyer.
2. Highest Bidder
Subject to any reserve price, the highest bidder shall be the Buyer and a dispute shall be settled by the Auctioneer who may at any time and his absolute discretion and regardless of the fall of the hammer reopen the bidding or withdraw the lot from sale. The decision of the Auctioneer shall be final.
3. Regulation of Bidding
The Auctioneer has the right in his absolute discretion to refuse any bid and to advance and regulate the bidding as he decides and any bid acknowledged and relied upon by the Auctioneer may not be withdrawn.
4. Rights of Auctioneer and Vendor
The Auctioneer and the vendor reserve the following rights which may be exercised by the Auctioneer without giving any reason therefore:
a) To keep secret the existence and amount of the reserve price (if any) of a lot;
b) To bid on behalf of the vendor or any prospective Buyer with or without disclosure;
c) In the event that any lot is not sold at the auction to offer to sell same thereafter by private treaty but otherwise subject to these conditions; and
5. Buyer Bids as Principal
Every Buyer shall be deemed to bid as principal unless prior to the auction he discloses to OzBid Auctions that he will be bidding on behalf of the principal and supplies the full name and address of his principal and a copy of a written authority to bid for and on behalf of that principal and such authority is satisfactory.
6. Buyers Registration Form
Every bidder shall complete and sign a Buyer’s Registration Form for Live Auctions. Every bidder shall complete the online Registration Form for timed auctions and absentee bidding.
7. Buyers Premium
The Buyer is required to pay to OzBid Auctions a Buyers Premium based on a percentage of the hammer price. This Buyers Premium is 24% including GST.
“G.S.T.” means that goods and services tax imposed by the A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999 (Com)(as amended)
a. OzBid Auctions will sell the property to be auctioned on a G.S.T. inclusive basis. The hammer price will therefore be inclusive of any G.S.T. payable. OzBid Auctions will invoice the Purchaser for the hammer price and Buyers premium, the latter made up of 21.8% + G.S.T = 24%. The vendor will be responsible to pay the G.S.T. to the Australian Tax Office.
9. Statements Made by Auctioneer at Rostrum for Live Auctions
All conditions, notices, descriptions, statements and other matters in the catalogues and elsewhere concerning a lot are subject to any statements modifying or affecting the same made by the Auctioneer form the rostrum prior to any bid being accepted for the lot.
10. Catalogue Descriptions for both Live and Timed Auctions
a. Any representation or statement by OzBid Auction in any catalogue, advertisement or brochure as to the authorship, origin, date, age, period, attribution, genuineness, provenance, condition, quality, or estimated selling price of any lot is a statement of opinion only. Any illustrations in the catalogue are solely for the guidance of prospective Buyers and are not to be relied upon in terms of tone or colour or necessarily to reveal imperfections in any lot;
b. Buyers must satisfy themselves as to all matters referred to above (a) by inspection or otherwise prior to the date of the auction.
11. Exclusions of Warranties
a. All Lots are sold “as is” and OzBid Auctions and the Vendor make no representations or warranties as to any Lot other than those implied by the Common Law or by statute, the exclusion of which would render this Condition void or voidable or which would constitute an offense by the Auctioneer or the Vendor.
b. Intending bidders must satisfy themselves by inspection or otherwise as to the nature of the Lot and must accept same with all faults, patent or latent (if any).
i. Within twenty-one (21) days of the date of auction OzBid Auctions receives notice writing from the Buyer of any Lot that in his view the Lot is a Forgery, and
ii. Within fourteen (14) days of such notice, the Buyer returns the Lot to OzBid Auctions in the same condition as at the date of auction, and
iii. Within a reasonable time thereafter the Buyer satisfies OzBid Auctions is a Forgery and that the Buyer is able to give a good and marketable title of the Lot free of any liens or encumbrances, then OzBid Auctions will set aside the sale and refund the Buyer paid for the Lot.
b. Provide that the Buyer shall have no rights under this Condition if:
i. He or she does not give the notice in writing within twenty-one (21) days as specified in Clause 11 (a)(1)
ii. The catalogue description at the date of the auction was in accordance with the then generally accepted opinions of scholars or experts or fairly indicated that there was a conflict of such opinion, or
iii. It can be established that the Lot is a Forgery only by means of a scientific process not generally accepted for use until after the date of the auction or by means of a process which as at that date was unreasonably expensive or impractical or was likely to have caused damage to the Lot;
c. The Buyer shall not be entitled to claim under this Condition for more than the amount paid by him for the Lot and in particular shall have no claims for any loss, consequential loss or damage, whether direct or indirect, suffered by him
d. The benefit of this Condition shall not be assignable and shall rest solely and exclusively in the Buyer who shall be the person to whom the original invoice was made out by Arthouse Auction in respect to the Lot when sold and who has since the auction retained uninterrupted and unencumbered ownership thereof.
e. In the event of a dispute in this Condition then the matter shall be settled by arbitration, the Arbitrator to be nominated by the President of the Auctioneers and Valuers Association of Australia (Inc.). Both the Buyer and the Venor agree to be bound by that decision.
13. Agreement for Sale and Payment of Purchase Price Upon the Sale of a Lot, the Buyer Shall:
a. Pay to OzBid Auctions the Purchase Price on the date of the auction unless such other terms or period have been specified or agreed to prior to the auction. Payment shall be made in Australian Dollars either in cash, credit card, or by telegraphic transfer direct to OzBid Auctions bank account.
14. Collection of Purchases
a. The property in a Lot shall not pass to the Buyer until the Purchase Price has been paid in full.
e. Any packing and handling of purchased Lots by OzBid Auctions is undertaken solely as a service to Buyers, and will only be undertaken at OzBid Auctions discretion.
15. Remedies for Non-Payment or Failure to Collect Purchases
a. If a Buyer fails either to pay for or to take away any purchased Lot on the day of the auction or such other period such as is specified at the auction or subsequently agreed to or any cheque given on account of the Purchase Price is dishonoured, OzBid Auctions shall, without further notice to the Buyer and in it’s absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights or remedies it may have, and without being bound to give any notice, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights or remedies:
i. To absolutely forfeit any monies with the Buyer may have paid;
ii. To issue proceedings against the Buyer for damages for breach of contract;
iii. To rescind the sale of that or any other Lot sold to the Buyer at the same or any other auction;

Taxes and duties
All prices quoted are inclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Returns and refunds
Should you receive an incorrect or damaged artwork, please immediately contact the Gallery and we can arrange, as appropriate, either a goods exchange, refund or gift voucher replacement.
We encourage you to contact us and ask as many questions needed about a specific artwork in our online gallery before you purchase. You may also wish to request addition photos. Please feel free to enquire until you are fully satisfied.
