Marie Ryder

Marie Ryder was born in 1966 and grew up at Ltyentye Apurte in Central Australia. The Ltyentye Apurte Community, also known as Santa Teresa, is an Arrernte indigenous community in the Northern Territory, located about 80kms from Alice Springs.

Marie is now mainly based in the remote Utopia artist community (350kms north- east) of Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory.

Marie is the daughter of Theresa Ryder, a highly respected and sought after Hermannsberg landscape artist. Marie learned to paint by watching her mother and other artists in her community.

Marie’s paintings are of women’s stories, including depictions of bush tucker, bush flowers and travelling women. Marie also enjoys searching for and collecting traditional bush tucker, using age-old methods passed on from her ancestors.

Marie paints in a very illustrative and colourful design, using a precise dotting technique, in the classic Santa Teresa style. Marie’s artworks are very popular and consistently beautiful.
