  • Provenance: Abie Loy Kemarre (b.1972) is a prominent contemporary Aboriginal artist from the Utopia region in Central Australia. A member of the Eastern Anmatyerre language group, Abie was born at Utopia and is the granddaughter of esteemed artist Kathleen Petyarre, who mentored her from an early age. Abie is the daughter of Margaret Loy Pula (Wynne Prize winner, 2012) and niece to celebrated artist, Gloria Petyarre. This familial connection to a legacy of strong female artists has deeply influenced her artistic journey and thematic focus.

Abie began painting in the mid-1990s and quickly developed a distinctive visual language that combines traditional Dreaming stories with a contemporary aesthetic. Her work often explores themes connected to her ancestral lands, particularly the Bush Hen Dreaming (Kweyetye), which has been passed down through her matrilineal line.

Renowned for her meticulous technique, Abie employs delicate dotting and complex patterning to depict the movement of ancestral beings across the landscape, ceremonial sites, and natural cycles. Her paintings are not only visually captivating but also serve as encoded maps of spiritual knowledge and cultural memory. She is also highly regarded for her unique representation of the sacred "Bush Medicine Leaves" that the women of Utopia gather at different times of the year to make use of the multiple, important medicinal qualities this plant bears. She utilises a vivid colour palette in her Bush Leaves representations and illustrates the plant as a whole, by painting it's seeds and having the leaves blossom out from them.

Over the years, Abie's work has evolved to include abstract explorations of body markings (awelye) and landscape formations, demonstrating a dynamic balance between tradition and innovation. Her work has been exhibited widely in Australia, Europe, and the United States, and is held in major national and international collections.
