  • Provenance: Bessie Pitjara (b.1970) is an emerging Aboriginal Australian artist from the Anmatyerre language group, born in the Utopia region of Central Australia on traditional country known as Alhalkere. Her mother was the highly respected Utopia painter Polly Ngale, and her aunts include well-known artists such as Kathleen Ngale and Angelina Pwerle, situating Bessie within a distinguished lineage of Central Desert women artists.

Bessie began painting in 2005, working first for galleries associated with the Utopia region. She continues the Dreamings (tjukurrpa) of her mother and country, particularly the Anwekety (Bush Plum) story and the Atnwelarre/Kame (Pencil Yam) narratives.

In her paintings, Bessie employs a layered technique: building up fields of colour through dotting and fanning, subtle brushwork and layering to evoke the seasonal growth, ripening, and gathering of bush plums, the movement of wind and seeds, and the relationships between women, land and ceremony. The bush plum is more than a bush food, it is a cultural plant with its own story of dispersal and renewal.

Although still emerging in international recognition, her paintings are gaining visibility in galleries and art markets. With a strong connection to her homeland, her cultural lineage, and a distinctive style that resonances with the Utopia tradition yet expresses her own voice, Bessie Pitjara stands as an important ongoing bearer of her Country's story and an artist to watch in the expanding field of contemporary Indigenous Australian art.
