  • Provenance: Carbiene McDonald Tjangala (b.1961) was born in Papunya, Northern Territory. He is the son of Snowy McDonald and hails from a distinguished artistic lineage. His sister, Martha McDonald, is also a highly regarded Papunya artist, and he's the grandson of Shorty Lungkata Tjungurrayi, a founding figure of the Papunya Tula art movement.??

Remarkably, Carbiene only began painting in 2018, when Papunya Tjupi Arts opened its doors to male artists. His work, primarily executed in loose, colored acrylic squares on canvas, represents a modern yet traditional expression of his inherited Dreaming. These paintings depict a sequence of waterholes located between Docker River and Kata Tjuta, specifically sites like Petermann Ranges, Blood's Range, Docker River and Mulyayti.??

Within just a year, Carbiene won the 2019 Hadley's Art Prize for his mesmerising work Four Dreamings. Judges described his painting as possessing an almost mirage-like intensity and sublime surface textures that defy digital reproduction. His acclaimed painting was acquired by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Charles Darwin University Art Gallery also purchased a work for its collection, recognising its cultural and artistic significance.??

Carbiene has since held several solo exhibitions, including one at RAFT Artspace in Alice Springs and has also participated in group exhibitions such as "Light and Land" at Edwina Corlette Gallery (2025) and Important Australian Indigenous Art at Philip Bacon Galleries (2024), among others.
