Provenance:
Emily Kame Kngwarreye (c.1910-1996) was an Anmatyerre elder and painter from Utopia in the Northern Territory, whose late-blooming but extraordinarily prolific career made her a defining figure of contemporary Indigenous Australian art. Born around 1910 at Soakage Bore, she spent much of her life living according to traditional law, working on pastoral properties, and participating in women's law and ceremony.
In 1977, Emily became a founding member of the Utopia Women's Batik Group, a community art initiative that revived traditional practices and provided an outlet for cultural expression. She did not begin painting on canvas until 1988, when she was already in her late seventies. In a remarkably short span, she produced an estimated 3,000 paintings in just eight years.
Her work is rooted in her ancestral country, Alhalkere, and in the Dreaming of her people. She often painted motifs connected to yam seed (kam), emu, grass seed, and other elements of her land, using a striking visual language of dots, layered brushstrokes, vibrant colour, and gestural marks. Her style, though sometimes compared to modernist abstraction, was anchored in her profound spiritual and cultural connection to Country.
Despite beginning her painting career late, Emily gained rapid recognition. She held her first solo exhibition in 1990, and in 1992 she was awarded the Australian Artists Creative Fellowship. After her death in 1996, her impact continued to grow. In 1997, her work represented Australia at the Venice Biennale, and shortly afterward major retrospectives toured nationally.
Continuing this upward trend, in 2007, her 1994 painting "Earth's Creation" was purchased by Tim Jennings of Mbantua Gallery & Cultural Museum for $1,056,000AUD at auction, setting a new record for an Aboriginal artwork. - Dimensions: 106.5cm x 85cm
