  • Provenance: Evelyn Pultara (Petyarre) was born around 1940 on a cattle property in the Northern Territory. She is an Anmatyerre woman and holds familial ties with significant figures in Aboriginal art: she is the niece of the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and the sister of artist Greeny Purvis Petyarre- all custodians of the Bush Yam Dreaming.

Evelyn began painting relatively late in life, around 1997, initially focusing on motifs related to bush tucker and awelye, and women's ceremonial body paint designs, before transitioning to concentrating exclusively on her sacred totem, the Bush Yam (Atnwelarre). Her work evolved rapidly, developing a signature style featuring vibrant linear and spiral patterns that evoke the rhythm and songlines of the yam corroboree, honouring ancestral narratives tied to food, water, and ceremony.

Evelyn's rise in prominence culminated in 2005, when she won the General Painting Award in the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) in Darwin. Her first solo exhibition was held at the World Vision Gallery in Sydney suburb of Leichhardt in 2003, followed quickly by shows in Melbourne and Milan. She participated in exhibitions, such as, "The Art of Evelyn Pultara" in Sydney and Japingka Gallery in Fremantle, WA.

Evelyn's art is held in several important collections, including the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin, The Holmes à Court Collection in Perth, and the Mbantua Gallery Collection in Alice Springs.
