Provenance:
George Tjungurrayi was born around 1943 at Wala Wala, a claypan and soakage site in the Gibson Desert near Kiwirrkurra, Western Australia. He was raised in a traditional Pintupi nomadic lifestyle, moving across country until he came into European contact in the early 1960s. He comes from a family of artists: his older brother, Willy Tjungurrayi, and his sisters Naata Nungurrayi and Nganngi (Nancy) Nungurrayi are also respected Pintupi painters.
George had early involvement in the foundation of the Papunya Tula art movement. In 1971, when school teacher Geoffrey Bardon invited senior men to paint murals at the local school, George's uncle, Charlie Tarawa Tjungurrayi- a source of great inspiration, also took part. Marking the beginning of the contemporary Aboriginal art movement. By around 1976, encouraged by senior law man Nosepeg Tjupurrula, George began painting independently for Papunya Tula Artists.
During the 70s and 80s, his work reflected traditional Pintupi dot patterns, grids, lines and circles associated with Tingari Dreaming. From the mid-80s onward, he evolved a minimalist, abstract style distinguished by finely parallel transverse lines, evoking both ceremonial body painting and desert fluted carvings called ‘Tingari'.
George held his first solo exhibitions in the late 90s at Utopia Art Gallery in Sydney and Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi in Melbourne earning him critical acclaim. In 2003 he was voted among Australia's 50 Most Collectable Artists by Australian Art Collector magazine.
He was a finalist for the Wynne Prize, commended for the Alice Prize in 2006 and was included in the 21st Biennale of Sydney in 2018, which is regarded as one of the leading international contemporary art events.
In 2020, George was selected at a finalist in the prestigious Mosman Art Prize!
George's work is held in major institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, Groninger Museum (Netherlands), Museum Seattle (USA) among others. - Dimensions: 63cm x 73cm
