'Marrawuk'
Acrylic on canvas.
Painted in 2023.

Artwork is stretched and ready to hang.

  • Provenance: Helen McCarthy Tyalmuty (b.1972) is a contemporary Aboriginal Australian artist of the Batjamal language group, from Bulgul country in the Top End of the Northern Territory. Helen began her professional life as a teacher but has been painting full-time since 2003.

She creates multi-layered canvases that range from vibrant, complex structures to more restrained and introspective compositions. Her work draws from her connection to Country, kinship ties, land-management practices, ritual and ceremony, and her personal narrative of relocation and education. It honours tradition and embraces contemporary aesthetics. One of her primary stories relates to Marrawuk- or The Dry Season.

Helen's recognition in the contemporary Indigenous art scene has been substantial. Her first solo exhibition occurred in 2006, and in 2007 she won the People's Choice Award at the 24th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA) for her painting Tyemeny Liman's Wutinggi (Grandpa Harry's Canoe), a work honouring her grandfather, a renowned canoe-maker.
