  • Provenance: Judy Watson Napangardi (c.1935-2016) was a distinguished Warlpiri painter from the community of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory of Australia. Born around 1935 at Yarungkanji on Mt Doreen Station, a time when Warlpiri families still lived predominantly in traditional, nomadic ways. As a young woman, Judy travelled with her family by foot to their ancestral sites at Mina Mina and Yingipurlangu, places rich with bush tucker, waterholes and dreaming tracks.

Judy began painting in the 1980s under the guidance of her older sister, Maggie Watson Napangardi, at the community-owned art centre in Yuendumu. Her work displayed a unique style characterised by "dragged dotting", long sweeping lines of dots and vibrant colour fields that evoke women's ceremonial movements, the female journeying of Dreaming ancestors, and the natural rhythms of desert country.

Her paintings frequently revolve around the Mina Mina as well as related ancestral narratives including Karnta (Women), Kanakurlangu (Digging Stick), Ngalyipi (Snake Vine), Yunkaranyi (Honey Ant) and Jintiparnta (Native Truffle). These stories are tied to her custodial Country. Judy's work achieved national and international recognition. Her paintings are represented in major institutions including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Aboriginal Art Museum Utrecht in the Netherlands.
