  • Provenance: Kathleen Petyarre (1940-2018) was born at a sacred water soakage on the western boundary of Utopia Station in the Northern Territory. Raised on the land, Kathleen spent her childhood learning its seasonal rhythms, bush foods, waterholes, and sacred stories firsthand. She was a niece of the legendary artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye and is one of several famous sisters, Gloria, Violet, Myrtle, Jeanna, Ada Bird, who are also acclaimed artists.

Kathleen's signature style involves layering very fine dots that create aerial-view landscapes. Her central Dreaming subject is Arnkerrthe- the Mountain Devil or Thorny Devil Lizard, whose epic journeys across her country form the conceptual core of many of her paintings. She also painted stories like ‘Women Hunting Emu', ‘Bush Seeds', and ‘Dingo Dreaming', often layering symbols and lines to reveal secret or gender-specific ceremonial meaning obscured by dot motifs.

Kathleen earned many accolades, including the 1996 Telstra Art Award, the 1997 Visy Board Art Prize, and the People's Choice at the 1998 Seppelt Contemporary Art Award in Sydney. She featured in major solo and retrospective exhibitions, notably Genius of Place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in 2001.

Her paintings are housed in prestigious public and private collections globally, including- the National Gallery of Australia, Musée du Quai Branly (Paris), and museums in the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia. She was repeatedly named among Australia's 50 most collectible artists by Art Collector magazine.
