'Awelye Atnwengerrp (Women's Ceremony)'
Acrylic on belgian linen.

Artwork is stretched and ready to hang.

  • Provenance: Minnie Pwerle (1915-2006) was born near Utopia, north-east of Alice Springs into a family of celebrated artists. Her daughter Barbara Weir and her sisters, Emily Pwerle, Molly Pwerle and Galya Pwerle, are equally well-known and celebrated artists- although, they didn't begin painting until later in life, Minnie was in her 80s.

Her Dreamings relate primarily to women's ceremonial stories and the bush foods associated with her Country (especially Bush Melon (Anwekety) and Bush Melon Seed), which are central to her inherited responsibilities and knowledge. Minnie's painting style is instantly recognizable. Like her sisters, Minnie's paintings depict traditional women's ceremonies known as "Awelye Atnwengerrp". The bold expressive lines in her paintings represent body paint, dancing tracks in the sand and sacred places where the ceremonies take place.

Despite her brief painting career, Minnie gained significant national and international acclaim. Her works are held in major collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and numerous public and private collections around the world. She is often mentioned alongside other prominent Utopia artists, including her daughter Barbara, and her sister-in-law, Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
  • Dimensions: 91cm x 91cm
  • Medium: Acrylic on belgian linen.
