  • Provenance: Nellie Marks Nakamarra is a respected Indigenous artist from the Western Desert region of Central Australia. Born in 1976 in the remote community of Kintore, near the Northern Territory/Western Australia border, Nellie is of Pintupi and Ngaanyatjarra heritage. She grew up immersed in strong cultural traditions, surrounded by powerful stories, ceremonies, and the rich artistic legacy of the desert.

Nellie is the daughter of Maureen Marks Nakamarra, a talented artist in her own right, and grew up observing and learning from the senior women who painted in the community art centres. These early experiences profoundly shaped her creative voice. Her connection to the land, her people, and her Dreaming stories is not only inherited but actively lived through her art.

Her works depict Tjukurrpa (Dreaming stories), particularly women's ceremonies, bush foods, and ancestral sites connected to her Country. Using intricate dot work and a vivid yet earthy palette, Nellie is also custodian of Dreaming stories from her father's and her grandfather's country which lies to the east of Kintore in the Northern Territory.

Now living and working between Papunya and other communities in the Western Desert, Nellie continues to develop her practice, gaining recognition for her unique style that blends traditional symbology with a bold, contemporary energy. Her work has been exhibited across Australia and internationally, and she is considered part of the new wave of desert artists who are preserving culture while evolving its expression.
