TERESA BAKER & CLARISE TUNKIN

"Minma Marlilu Tjukurrpa"
Acrylic on canvas.
Painted in 2025.
Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Artwork is stretched and ready to hang.

  • Provenance: Born in Alice Springs in 1977, Teresa grew up in Kanpi, a remote community just across the Northern Territory border. Her mother, Kay Baker, is a respected Pitjantjatjara artist, and her grandfather, the late lawman and artist Jimmy Baker, mentored her in ancestral stories and artistic traditions. Teresa began painting in 2005 at the Tjungu Palya Art Centre in Nyapari, learning technique and storytelling from her grandfather and family lineage narrative. She also taught the Pitjantjatjara language at the Kanpi school and later worked at Murputja school, weaving cultural education into community life.

Her first solo exhibition took place at Vivien Anderson Gallery in 2015. Teresa's paintings centre around the Minyma Malilu (aka Marlilu) story, a crucial Women's Creation ancestor from her Country's Dreaming (Tjukurrpa). The narrative depicts Malilu traveling across the landscape searching for her daughters and finding solace in a sacred cave near Kanpi, a site still honoured in women's ceremonies today. Her artwork features rich, earthy tones layered with vibrant ochres, reds, and whites, focusing on the dynamic use of negative space, colour nuance, and fine dot-work to evoke movement, memory, and spiritual presence.

Teresa Baker has been a finalist for several major art awards, including the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA), the Kate Challis RAKA Award, and the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
