Tarat Pawan
Born in 1993, Tarat Pawan is a young indigenous artist from western Victoria. He is a member of the Gunditjmara tribe and is a descendant from Truganini, the last Tasmanian queen.
He learned traditional songs and dance as a young boy from his father ‘Woongaroong’, and was taught to paint by his uncle ‘Kurun Warun’, an internationally recognised indigenous artist.
Tarat Pawan, translating to ‘Hunting Feathers’, is a name given to him by one of the Gunditjmara elders as a child.
He combines dots, lines and a variety of colour to create art, often reflecting stories of the Hopkins river and the natural elements. He brings a modern, fresh feel with traditional themes and symbols, to create abstract, contemporary aboriginal art.
